Winter Holiday Concerts and Performances
Students in our schools have been preparing a variety of holiday performances. We invite you to make your season merrier and brighter by attending a number of the concerts and events.

 
Nominations Open for the Kim Baysek-Young Extra Mile Award
Nominations are open for the 2024 Kim Baysek-Young Extra Mile Award, which celebrates employees who have gone above and beyond for Shaler Area students or to contribute to the success of the school district.  
Closing and Delay Information
With the winter weather season approaching, we want to remind our families of the district’s procedures for delaying or canceling the school day to ensure you can plan accordingly. It’s also an opportunity to provide information about how Flexible Instructional Days are used in place of canceling classes due to inclement weather.  
Burchfield Primary School Ranked as One of the Best in the Commonwealth
U.S. News & World Report has released their annual “Best Elementary Schools” rankings and Burchfield Primary School is getting noticed. Of the 2,978 schools in Pennsylvania ranked, Burchfield was #61 and within the top 2% of schools across our entire Commonwealth. “It is an honor to be considered a top performing school, because it is a testament to the collaboration and partnership that we value with our staff, families, and students,” noted Jeffrey Rojik, Principal of Burchfield Primary.  
Buzzing with Learning
Ray Milligan, apiarist, came to visit the students of Shaler Area Middle School to share his knowledge and expertise about beekeeping. He brought in equipment for students to interact with including a bee suit, a smoker, different sizes of hive boxes, and a functional observation hive with live bees.  
Four Shaler Area High School Students Sign National Letters of Intent
Four Shaler Area athletes signed National Letters of Intent with NCAA institutions. This marks a significant step forward in their academic and athletic careers.  
Brett Fadgen Named 2023 Shaler Area High School Distinguished Alumnus
Fadgen was nominated for this honor by his classmate, Beth Sanchez, who reflected, “Brett exemplifies our core values of pride, respect, and honor. Brett was born without a fully formed right arm, but never let that stop him. I remember that he had a prosthetic arm, his warm smile, and the fact that he never treated his disability as anything other than part of who he was.”  
Artistic Upcycling
The average American produces nearly 500 pounds of plastic waste each year. Only a fraction of that is ever actually recycled. Shaler Area High School Art Teacher Shauna Ferris was inspired to transform trash into art.  
Students Explore Career Opportunities through Beattie Roadshow
This hands-on event brought over 50 area professionals to give students an opportunity to explore career options, including firefighting, welding, construction, cosmetology, sports medicine, automotive technology, and more.
