Shaler Area School District values the celebration and
promotion of excellence in the community.
The Kim Baysek-Young Extra Mile Award recognizes district employees who have gone the extra mile for Shaler Area students or to contribute to the success of the school district.
Each year, in January, Shaler Area School District recognizes employees—teachers, paraprofessionals, administrators, school counselors, administrative assistants, custodians, or other staff members—who have gone above and beyond for students, the district, or community with the Kim Baysek-Young Extra Mile Award.
The award, previously named the "Extra Mile Award," is named in honor of Mrs. Baysek-Young, a beloved third-grade teacher at Reserve Primary School, who passed away early in the 2020-21 school year. During her 22 years with Shaler Area, Mrs. Baysek-Young was an integral part of multiple schoolwide programs and community events and went above and beyond to provide students with educational opportunities and experiences. She received the award in 2019 for her unwavering support of students.
Nominations are solicited each fall/winter and then reviewed by a panel of district stakeholders. Winners are announced mid-January.
