 6th Grade General Music


In 6th Grade, students are given the opportunity to choose a music course to studyBand, Orchestra, Chorus, or General Music.  Students who elect to take General Music will sing, play instruments, read and write music, move, listen, and respond to music using a variety of styles and historical periods of music. 
 
1st 9 Weeks: "Bach to Rock"
In this unit, we will learn about the key composers of the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Impressionist Eras, as well as popular pieces of music from each era and historical happenings.
 
2nd 9 Weeks: "History of Rock and Roll"
Beginning with the first rock song "Rock Around the Clock" through today's pop music, this unit touches on defining moments, artists, and periods in the sixty year history of rock and roll.  Students will listen to songs by various artists and discuss music's roll as the soundtrack to history.
 
3rd 9 Weeks: "Music Toolbox"
This unit focuses on music theory--reading and writing of music.  Students will practice reading rhythmic and melodic patterns in treble clef using World drums, Orff instruments, and body percussion.  Students will also compose music.
 
4th 9 Weeks: "Beginning Guitar"
During this final unit, students will become familiar with the parts of the guitar, basic strumming technique, beginning chords, and playing melodies on the guitar.
