Over the past several years, Shaler Area School District staff has been working to align the curriculum to meet the PA Core Standards and increase the level of academic rigor within our classrooms. At Shaler Area, our scores are above the statewide averages in many of our buildings. Our goal is to continue to provide a well-rounded academic experience for our students and prepare them for post-secondary training and the workforce.

In the 2017-18 school year, the district continues its commitment to educational initiatives that will benefit students across all grade levels. Some of these initiatives include:

  • Implementing the Fundations program for students in kindergarten through second grade to teach the foundational skills of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) as well as support instruction in reading, writing, and language skills.
  • Changes to the English language arts curriculum at the middle school to provide students with the opportunity to learn new material and in more depth.
  • Changes to the math curriculum to maintain areas of strength and focus more attention on areas for growth.
  • Purchasing new science textbooks at the middle school and high school level to maintain students’ access to current materials, especially at the advanced high school levels.
  • Supporting the Project ACE (Advancing Classroom Education) 1:1 iPad initiative that provides iPad mini devices to all students in grades 7-12 and a 2:1 iPad to student ratio at the K-6 level.
  • Upgrading the technology infrastructure in all primary schools, concluding a 5-year infrastructure replacement offset by federal funds, to ensure students do not experience interruptions in Internet access.

This will be the final year for Pennsylvania to publish School Performance Profile scores as the state transitions to the use of the Future Ready PA Index, the state’s new public-facing school report card.

The Future Ready PA Index will utilize a dashboard approach to present school-level data, and will feature a broad range of indicators, such as English language acquisition, career readiness indicators, access to advanced coursework, and chronic absenteeism, among others. These indicators were identified following months of dialogue with thousands of stakeholders, including parents and families, educators, community organizations, advocates, and policymakers, across Pennsylvania.

“While Pennsylvania is transitioning to a new school report card next year, providing communities and parents with transparency, accountability, and access to supports and resources remains our number one priority,” said Secretary of Education Pedro A. Rivera.

The Future Ready PA Index will launch in the 2018-2019 school year.
