A committee of teachers at the middle school has started a Backpack Initiative for the 2014-2015 school year. This program is being established to assist district students and their siblings in need of weekend food supplies.
Each family participating in this program would receive a paper bag packed with child-friendly, single-serving snacks and easily prepared meals each Friday. The food selections will include two breakfast items, two lunch items, and two snacks. Items sent home each weekend will vary. At this time, there are no eligibility requirements for participating in this program other than completing and returning the enrollment form. A bag would be given for each student and his/her siblings. By including siblings, we hope to reach more than just the children in our building.
Our goal is to begin the program at the middle school until we see how many families wish to participate. We would like to eventually grow the program to include distribution at other schools in the district, and also like to add some kind of summer food program in the coming years.
Enrollment letters will be given to all middle school students in early October. We hope to start distribution later that month.
This program will be funded from donations. The teachers and staff members in the district have raised the initial start up funds. We have also received some private donations. We will continue to collect donated food items and money throughout the year to sustain the program.
