Meet Mrs. Jones

Hello!! Welcome to my reading class!! My name is Melissa Jones, and I am thrilled to be the Reading Specialist at Burchfield Primary! We are going to have a great year!! This is my 18th year as an educator and my 12th year in the Shaler Area School District. Prior to teaching in Shaler Area, I taught in the Bethel Park School District for three years, and before that, I taught 3 years in the Wilkinsburg School District. When I came to Shaler Area in 2008, I taught 3rd grade at Jeffery Primary, then I took a leave during the 2009-2010 school year and another two-year leave from 2011-2013 to stay home with my boys, Domenic who is now 10 years old and Geno who is 8 years old. Since returning from my time off, I have taught 4th grade and 5th grade at Shaler Area Elementary, was an Academic Support teacher focusing on reading with students grades 4-6, and most recently a Reading Specialist at Jeffery and Scott Primary.
I have a Bachelor's degree from Duquesne University and my Master's degree from Gannon University. Additionally, I have a Reading Specialist teaching certificate.
As always, each new school year holds the promise of new discovery and learning, as well as the prospect of personal growth in all areas. A good learning experience is built on a cooperative effort among parent, child, and teacher. I look forward to getting to know all of my students and parents as well. There will be so many things to learn at Scott Primary!!!!
