Shaler Area continues its Respect for All campaign with Challenge #5

Dear Shaler Area families:

This school year, Shaler Area has been focused on promoting and celebrating respect within the school district. We began the discussion to explore respect across all of our schools by focusing on answering the question: “How are we creating a culture of respect?” This question led us to begin planning a districtwide Respect for All campaign. Starting in April, and through the remainder of the school year, we will be promoting our Respect for All campaign in every school through biweekly videos, challenges, quotes, and information that will hopefully trigger awareness and foster respect.

We are inviting you to share in our campaign in your home and community and encouraging everyone to take the biweekly challenges with us and our students. Feel free to share how you are participating in our #RespectForAll campaign and showing #TitanRespect by using the hashtags on social media. Below you will find our Respect for All campaign schedule:

Wednesday, April 3
“It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it.”
-Mae West
Challenge: Over the next two weeks, compliment or say something nice to as many people as possible.

Wednesday, April 17
“We learned about gratitude and humility – that other people had a hand in our success, from the teachers who inspired us to the custodians who kept our school clean…and we were taught to value everyone’s contribution and treat everyone with respect.”
-Former First Lady Michelle Obama
Challenge: Over the next two weeks, say thank you or show gratitude to as many people as possible.
Fact: Research shows that students who show gratitude make better grades, have a more positive outlook, and develop trust in others. Also, showing gratitude can increase the desire to serve in the community.

Wednesday, May 1
“There will always be a reason why you meet people. Either you need them to change your life or you’re the one that will change theirs.”
-Madeline Sheehan
Challenge: Over the next two weeks, meet and talk with someone you don’t know. Get to know them and what they like to do.

Wednesday, May 15
“Life’s most important question is, ‘what are you doing for others?’”
-Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Challenge: Over the next two weeks, volunteer to help someone else.
Fact: Research indicates that effective service opportunities for students improve grades, increase school attendance, and develop students’ personal and social responsibility.

Wednesday, May 29
“Showing gratitude is one of the simplest yet most powerful things that humans can do for each other.”
-Randy Pausch
Challenge: Over the next two weeks, write a thank you note to someone – a teacher, a classmate, a parent, etc.
