Shaler Area participates in Safe2Say Something

In our continued efforts to maintain a safe and secure learning environment for our students and staff, we’d like to announce Shaler Area’s participation in the Safe2Say Something, youth violence prevention program and anonymous reporting system run by the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General.

As outlined in Pennsylvania Act 44 of 2018, Shaler Area School District is participating in the Safe2Say Something Anonymous Reporting System, which began on Monday, January 14, 2019. Safe2Say Something is a school safety tool for students, staff, and communities to anonymously report unsafe, potentially harmful, dangerous, violent or criminal activities in a school environment or the threat of activities in a school environment. Reports can be made via a mobile app, website, or 24/7 phone line.

Beginning January 14, 2019, students, staff, parents and community members will be able to submit an anonymous tip through the Safe2Say Something system in one of three ways:
  • A mobile app, which is available for download on Apple and Android devices.
  • The Safe2Say Something website: https://www.safe2saypa.org/
  • A 24/7 phone line: 1-844-SAF2SAY (1-844-723-2729)

Safe2Say works through five easy steps:
  1. A tip is submitted via mobile app, website, or by calling the state-based 24/7 Crisis Center.
  2. The tip is then triaged by the Crisis Center to gather enough information to act on it.
  3. The tip is delivered to the impacted school and, as needed, local law enforcement via 911 County Dispatch.
  4. The school and, as needed, local law enforcement, assess and intervene with the at-risk individual.
  5. The school then closes out the tip and reports actions taken as a record for their school.

Please note, this system is NOT an emergency hotline. If you need immediate assistance and/or are reporting an event that could immediately affect the school community, please call 911 to be connected to our local police departments (Shaler, Etna, Millvale or Reserve).

Safe2Say is a national program that was developed by the Sandy Hook Promise. It is designed to teach youth and adults how to recognize warning signs and signals, especially within social media, from individuals who may be a threat to themselves and to others and to “say something” before it is too late. In the coming months, all Shaler Area Middle School and High School students and staff members will be trained on the program to recognize warning signs/signals and to submit tips.

More information about the program is available online at https://www.safe2saypa.org/.
