Back-to-School information for the 2018-19 school year

Shaler Area faculty, staff, and administration have been busy this summer making preparations for this upcoming school year and are excited to welcome everyone back for the start the 2018-19 school year. The first day of school for all students is Wednesday, August 29, 2018. Some of the changes and highlights for this school year include:

Administrative Changes
  • Coordinator of Academic Services: Eloise Milligan, formerly the Reserve Primary School principal, transitioned to her new role within the district’s central offices. In her new role, Mrs. Milligan will continue to oversee the federal programs within the district as well as plan and coordinate an aligned K-12 curriculum, oversee the district’s hybrid learning initiatives, and seek out grants and funding opportunities to support district programs.
  • Reserve Primary School Principal: Marty Martynuska has more than 28 years of experience in education and has successfully served in the role of primary and middle level principal for many years, including 15 years at Marzolf Primary and five years at Shaler Area Middle School. Mr. Martynuska will fill the Reserve Primary School principal position starting in the 2018-19 school year as well as take on additional roles in the district.
  • Shaler Area Middle School Principal: Eric Stennett will join Shaler Area to serve as the middle school principal. Dr. Stennett has 27 years of experience in education and excelled as a middle level principal in school districts in Ohio and western Pennsylvania, including 10 years at Shaler Area from 1998 to 2008. Most recently, Dr. Stennett served as principal of Hampton Township Middle School and has been working as an assistant professor of education and Director of the Ed. D. in Leadership and Administration Program at Point Park University.

New School
We are proud to open Scott Primary School this school year for students previously enrolled in kindergarten through third grade at Jeffery and Rogers Primary Schools. Scott Primary is designed to house each grade level in its own neighborhood of classrooms and special education rooms and includes enhanced security features, and a separate cafeteria, library, gymnasium, and STEAM room. Scott Primary students will receive information regarding orientation and sneak peek events before the start of the school year. There will be public open house events and a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony held later this fall. Stay tuned for additional information.

We are continuously evaluating our procedures to ensure a safe environment for everyone. In recent years, we have actively increased our district safety through facility improvements, additional safety personnel, and safety and response training. This summer, we constructed a captured vestibule entrance at Reserve Primary School (the final school in our plan to establish captured vestibules at each building) and improved the doors at Shaler Area Elementary School. In the 2018-19 school year, we plan to enhance safety by conducting a risk assessment for every building, reviewing and updating our Emergency Operations Plan, providing further training for staff in emergency operations, and conducting a table-top emergency exercise. Finally, the district plans to explore the possibility of creating a school police department or other security personnel options.

School Breakfast & Lunch Menus
Shaler Area received a $19,245-grant from the state Department of Education to support its school breakfast program K-6 in the 2018-19 school year. Students will see increased options that are designed to appeal to young learners. This school year, students in grades 2-3 also will have the option of purchasing various “smart snack” a la carte items during lunch. Menus can be found on Nutrislice, an interactive menu website and free smartphone app, which provides pictures, descriptions, nutritional information, special diet filters, and carb counts for each day’s menu. Nutrislice is available at sasd.nutrislice.com or through a free mobile app available on the iTunes App Store for iPhone users or on Google Play for Android-powered smartphones. Free and reduced-price breakfast and lunch meals are available to any Shaler Area family that qualifies. Applications are available on the district website. Students who were previously enrolled in the program must reapply each year.
