Shaler Area's 3rd annual STEAM Competition features largest field of competitors

Now in its third year, the Shaler Area High School STEAM Competition has grown to attract its largest field of competitors for the March 2 event—with teams of students coming from school districts in Allegheny, Butler, Washington, and Westmoreland counties.

The daylong competition challenges students to complete four on-site team challenges that incorporate multiple aspects of science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM), and require students to work collaboratively in their teams of five in order to succeed.

Each challenge is created by a team of Shaler Area High School teachers specializing in each subject area—including 2018 Teacher of the Year Finalist Greg Mason, high school physics teacher.

Students have been working for the past months on the off-site project challenge to create a mobile, underhand, corn hole catapult. Inspired by backyard picnic games, teams’ catapults will compete against one another in a game of corn hole.

This year’s competition is sponsored by Chevron, with support from the University of Pittsburgh College in High School program and the Shaler Area Education Foundation. The competition will take place at Shaler Area High School on Friday, March 2, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Participating school districts include:

Fox Chapel Area
