Continuity of Education Plan

Shaler Area implemented a Continuity of Education Plan due to the statewide school closure in response to COVID-19. Continuity of Education is the overarching term for any educational practices that occur in the event of a prolonged school closure. It is important that students have the opportunity to develop and maintain skills while away from the customary school environment. The district launched its Continuity of Education on March 30 with Remote Learning opportunities for students K-12.

Guidelines for Remote Learning

  1. Check-in for attendance using the attendance portal listed on each building page or follow the directions below.
  2. Follow your teacher’s directions to locate assignments. Each teacher will communicate a plan with their students and families.

Remote Learning Student Attendance Portal

In order to comply with attendance regulations set forth by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE), all students will need to submit attendance for each school day that they are participating in our Remote Learning opportunities. We ask that parents or students visit: https://support.sasd.k12.pa.us no later than 3:00 p.m. on each day. If your child is not participating in the daily remote learning activities, attendance should not be submitted.

To access the SASD Remote Learning Attendance Portal, you will need to enter the Username (@shaler.us)  and Password that was emailed to you on March 28, 2020.

Student’s usernames and passwords follow this convention:
Username:  [email protected]
Password:  sa.STUDENT#  (lunch code, can be found in IC portal)

For Example:
Username:  [email protected]
Password:   sa.330319

Infinite Campus logins are the same as above, just remove the @shaler.us after the username.

If you have specific questions about your child’s participation in Remote Learning, you are encouraged to reach out directly to the teacher. Additionally, contact information for our school support services can be accessed by through our district contact list.

Grading and Assessment

Due to the extended school closure, Shaler Area will be modifying its grading model effective Monday, April 20, 2020. Teachers will continue to work with students/families to address the need for assignment extension based on individual circumstances. As a result, the District will suspend Board Policy 213: Assessment of Student Progress for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.

The calendar has been modified, so that the 3rd nine weeks ended on March 13, 2020. Students have had every opportunity to send teachers anything that may be needed to close out the 3rd nine weeks. If you have any specific concerns, please contact your child’s teacher or principal.

Grades K-6 (Primary and Elementary School)
Completion of assignments is mandatory for students. For students in grades K-6, teachers will not assess student work on a Pass/Fail or traditional grading scale for the 4th nine weeks.  Rather, student work will be evaluated based upon engagement and work completion. Teachers will contact the parent/guardian of any student who is not actively engaging directly. Students in grades K-6 will not receive a report card for the 4th nine weeks.

Grades 7-8 (Middle School)
Completion of assignments is mandatory for students. For students in grades 7-8, teachers will not assess student work on a Pass/Fail or traditional grading scale for the 4th nine weeks. Rather, student work will be evaluated based upon engagement and work completion. Teachers will contact the parent/guardian of any student who is not actively engaging directly. Students in grades 7-8 will not receive a report card for the 4th nine weeks. Please note: If a middle school student is taking a course designated as a high school level course (Algebra I & Geometry only), they will follow the Pass/Fail guidelines noted below for students in grades 9-12 for that specific course.

Grades 9-12 (High School)
Completion of assignments is mandatory for students. For students in grades 9-12, a Pass/Fail system will be utilized for the 4th nine weeks report card.
  • PASS: Students earning at least 60% of the points will receive a pass.
  • FAIL: Students earning 59% or less of the points will receive a fail.
  • The Pass/Fail designations will be exempt from a student’s QPA.
  • Remote Learning will not negatively impact a student’s overall grade.
  • The overall Pass/Fail grade for the course will be determined by an average of the first three nine weeks' grades.
  • If a student's grade at the conclusion of the 3rd nine weeks falls short of meeting a prerequisite or passing a course, then the students 4th quarter performance may be used to enhance the students opportunity towards passing the course or meeting the prerequisite.
