High School teacher Jade Leung named finalist for state Teacher of the Year

Shaler Area School District is proud to announce Jade Leung, a Shaler Area High School science teacher, has been named one of 12 finalists for the state Teacher of the Year award.

“It’s a very humbling experience,” Ms. Leung said. “There are thousands of teachers in the state and even here at Shaler Area who are of such a high caliber. What is special about this award is I can share it with the District.”

Ms. Leung was nominated for the award and completed an extensive application to advance to the semifinalist round in February. All 12 regional finalists must prepare and submit for review a video of a lesson. The scores from the video and application packets will be combined to form a composite score. The Pennsylvania Department of Education will announce the 2016 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year during a special awards ceremony Dec. 6-8.

Ms. Leung is one of four finalists from western Pennsylvania.

Ms. Leung joined Shaler Area in 2007 and currently teaches biology and physics. She has done extensive research in bone tissue engineering, including working with the Pittsburgh Tissue Engineering Initiative. She brings many of these experiences to the classroom to provide real-world examples and hands-on lessons to the students.

“I try to use practical examples of science in the classroom so students understand why we’re learning about that content in the classroom,” Ms. Leung said.

She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and a master’s degree in education from Duquesne University. She is working toward earning her master’s in pastoral ministry from Duquesne University by the end of 2015.

Ms. Leung also is a 2nd degree black belt in Taekwondo and studies with Young Brothers Tae Kwon-Do. In addition to volunteering at area summer camps and local workshops, she has remained involved at Duquesne University as a volunteer speaker for students, Spiritan Campus Ministry volunteer, and member of the Alumni Board of Governors.
