Reading with Rover returns to Rogers Primary School

Students at Rogers Primary School are able to curl up with a good book and furry friend with the return of the Reading with Rover program.

After a two-year hiatus, Rogers Primary once again is partnering with Animal Friends to bring Reading with Rover into the school and provide therapy dogs to listen to students read.

“Reading with Rover truly makes a difference for our students at Rogers Primary,” said Danielle Franc, a Title I like Reading Specialist. “There is nothing like seeing the smile on a child’s face when the dogs return, and they are able to snuggle up and read a book to them. The confidence gained in a supportive environment makes a world of difference for these kids.”

The program benefits students in first through third grade who are receiving reading support and provides them with an opportunity to practice oral reading skills without the pressure of feeling self-conscious about their reading ability.

“Reading with Rover gives my students the chance to feel proud of the work they are putting in each day,” said Jenna Webb, a K-3 Learning Support Teacher. “Struggling readers are often reluctant to read out loud, and this program gives them an outlet to feel safe to take academic risks. The dogs are gentle and loving and really become great friends to our students.”
