Shaler Area School Board approves Dr. O’Black as Deputy Superintendent


Shaler Area is proud to recognize Dr. Bryan O’Black as the deputy superintendent of the Shaler Area School District.
The Shaler Area School Board approved the redesignation of Dr. O’Black’s local position title from assistant superintendent to deputy superintendent during its July 14 voting meeting. 
“This redesignation is in recognition of Dr. O’Black’s longevity with the school district and the knowledge and value he brings to Shaler Area,” said Mr. Jim Tunstall, school board president.
Dr. O’Black has worked in the field of education for more than 14 years. For the past 12 years, he has worked for Shaler Area School District in a variety of positions, serving as technology director (2009-2012), curriculum director (2012-2015) and assistant superintendent (2015-2021).
In recent years, Dr. O’Black has been instrumental in planning and enhancing professional development opportunities for district staff, incorporating best practices for human resource management, facilitating the implementation of the district’s Health and Safety plan during the COVID-19 pandemic, and expanding the district’s Project ACE 1:1 iPad Initiative.
“We are very grateful to Dr. O’Black for his continued service and dedication to Shaler Area,” said Dr. Sean Aiken, superintendent of schools. “Dr. O’Black has continued to take on projects and additional responsibilities with a commitment to students and staff and improving the district.”
During his career, Dr. O’Black has been an active member of numerous professional organizations and associations and has presented at a number of national, state, and regional conferences. Dr. O’Black is currently an active member of the PA Association of School Administrators Legislative Committee (PASA), International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), and Tri State Study Council. He is currently the president-elect of the Pennsylvania Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (PASCD).
Dr. O’Black’s work has been previously recognized by the National School Boards Association as a “20 to Watch” recipient in 2015, and by the University Council on Educational Administration (UCEA) with the Excellence in Educational Leadership award in 2019. Additionally, Dr. O’Black was a 2018-19 fellow for the Pennsylvania Educational Policy Leadership Center (EPLC).
Dr. O’Black holds a bachelor’s degree in education, master’s in educational administration and doctorate in education from Duquesne University.
