Shaler Area students help present virtual event in recognition of Native American Heritage Month
In recognition of Native American Heritage Month, join Indigenous youth leaders and their allies for an evening of virtual art, dialogue, and activism the day before Thanksgiving.

From Truth to Power: Indigenous Youth Leaders Speak will be presented virtually on November 25, 2020 from 7 to 8:15 p.m. (ET).

Shaler Area students, together with students and educators across America, will spark an intergenerational conversation about how to transform from a culture of denial, appropriation, and injustice into one of truth, restoration, and healing that will enable all to thrive in the sacred land we share and call home.

This program was co-created by Shaler Area High School junior Cassidy Laffey and is being hosted by, LIGHT Education Initiative, STAND, and Together We Remember. It will feature four panelists representing Indigenous communities:
  • Angela Noah, White Mountain Apache & Oklahoma Choctaw
  • Brian Barlow, Cherokee Nation
  • Jordyn Galvan, Mescalero Apache & Comanche
  • Sky Wildcat, Cherokee Nation and Muscogee (Creek) Nation

While this program is youth-curated and youth-led, all are welcome and organizers encourage the participation and feedback of its elders. The event will be held on Zoom and live-streamed to YouTube and/or Facebook. Representatives from TWR (Together We Remember) and the YAN (Together We Remember's Youth Action Network) will welcome the virtual audience and introduce the program. Next, there will be space for an Indigenous prayer to be shared. Then, a representative from the YAN will moderate a panel discussion. By the end of the panel, organizers will highlight opportunities for advocacy in keeping with their mission of turning collective memory into collective action. The program will conclude with one final prayer or poem. An edited and abbreviated transcript of the panel discussion will be published in the form of a blog post on the TWR website after the program.
