Shaler Area High School students start the #LeukemiaLoveLaughChallenge

Students are taking their English class lessons from book to social media in a new project they hope will go viral.

After reading “Tuesdays with Morrie,” about a professor dying of ALS or Lou Gehrigs Disease, the students researched other underfunded and deadly diseases and illnesses then analyzed why the Ice Bucket Challenge was so successful. Last year, students were tasked with creating the “next” Ice Bucket Challenge for one of the diseases they researched. The success of the project encouraged English teacher Kristen Susany to assign the same task to this year’s students.

Shaler Area High School Principal Tim Royall was the first to participate in the winning group’s “Leukemia Love Laugh Challenge.”

For “Leukemia Love Laugh Challenge,” participants had to get another person to smile by sharing a compliment or joke. The challenge is aimed to spread love and share a smile.
