Getting to know Dr. Shannon Howard, the new Shaler Area Middle School principal.
What are you most excited for with the start of the 2022-23 school year?
I am really looking forward to getting back into the classrooms and seeing students and teachers. I love middle school.

What extracurricular activities did you do in middle school and high school?
Band (French horn), dance team, and debate team
What would you be if you weren’t a principal?
An architect. I’d want design houses.

Pizza and hamburgers

Hilton Head, S.C.
What are your current hobbies?
Antiquing, watching movies, reading, and camping
What is one thing most people don’t know about you?
I have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. I took it up as an adult 7 years ago after watching my daughters receive their black belts and train to become instructors.
Any pets?
Delilah, a 2.5-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. She’s named for the Plain White T’s song “Hey There Delilah.” She is also known as Bubba and Diva.
What did you do on your summer vacation?
I traveled to Europe with my daughters. This was the first time that we have been to Europe. Over two weeks, we visited England, France, Germany, Belgium and Austria. My favorite locations were London, Saint Lo, Rouen, Arromanches-les-Bains, Bastogne, and Saltzburg.
