Shaler Area students take top awards in Japanese Speech Contest

Shaler Area High School students took top awards in the annual High School Japanese Speech Contest held at the University of Pittsburgh.

The Japan American Society of Pennsylvania hosts the Japanese Speech Contest at Pitt’s Oakland Campus each year for Japanese learners of all levels. More than 100 students participate in the competition that includes four speech levels and a poster session.

Senior Evan Lysko won first place in the Advanced Plus category, and sophomore Kylie Dougherty placed first and senior Alexis Finney placed second in the Intermediate category.

Students are required to write a speech on the chosen topic for the speech contest or make a trifold poster for Poster session. The 19 Shaler Area students who participated in the competition wrote and memorized a five-minute speech in Japanese about what Japan will be like in 10 years. The students’ speeches focused on everything from changes in Japanese culture to technological advancements to Japan's changing position on international affairs.
