Shaler Area’s music education program receives national recognition for 4th consecutive year

For the fourth year in a row, Shaler Area School District has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from The NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education.

Now in its 22nd year, the Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in effort to provide music access and education to all students. Shaler Area is one of 686 school districts in the nation and 218 districts in the state to be named among the Best Communities for Music Education.

“To be recognized with the Best Communities for Music Education designation for the fourth year in a row speaks to the dedication and strength of our entire music department as well as our commitment to provide quality music education to all students from kindergarten through high school,” said Superintendent Sean Aiken. “We are very proud to have our music education program consistently recognized at a national level.”

To qualify for the designation, Shaler Area answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, and support for the music programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.

The award program recognizes that Shaler Area is leading the way with learning opportunities as outlined in Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). ESSA recommends music and the arts as important elements of a well-rounded education for all children.
