Shaler Area High School students get glimpse into native SW Pa life

Shaler Area High School students in Jason Pirring’s History of Western Pennsylvania course had got a better glimpse into the daily lives of the Native Americans who first settled Western Pennsylvania.

Tom Anke, a fellow social studies teacher at the high school, is a member of the Allegheny Warparty and served as guest speaker in the class. Allegheny Warparty is a reenacting group that provides historical interpretation of native live in the late woodlands in Southwestern Pennsylvania, and Mr. Anke shared stories and artifacts of the Lenni Lenape (Delaware), Shawnee, and Senecas.

The semester-long elective course covers the early history of the region and how Native Americans influenced its development and left a lasting impression on the region.
