Students Explore Building a Career
Recently, students from Shaler Area High School attended the Builders Guild of Western PA Build On career event at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. Seventeen local trade unions and contractors held live demonstrations of their individual trades and spoke to students about the process and benefits of joining the trades. Attendees had the opportunity to apply hands-on experiences such as laying brick, finishing concrete, soldering pipe, harnessing up and climbing steel beams, virtual welding, and running a virtual excavator.

“This was an excellent opportunity for our juniors and seniors to have conversations with both apprenticeship coordinators and tradesmen/women. Our students were also able to work with these folks using tools and materials in a real-life scenario. With the current and projected job openings in these areas, the Builders Guild has really placed an emphasis on outreach to local high schools to get students engaged and excited about careers in the trades,” shared Brian Marree, SAHS Technology Education Teacher.

Dr. Bryan O’Black, Deputy Superintendent of Schools, noted “By fostering connections with organizations like the Builders Guild, Shaler Area is actively preparing students for diverse and rewarding career paths. The emphasis on trades work is particularly noteworthy, as these skills are essential for the development of well-rounded graduates. Creating opportunities for students to explore and engage with skilled professionals opens doors to a range of potential careers and helps them make informed decisions about their future.”
