Artistic Upcycling

The average American produces nearly 500 pounds of plastic waste each year. Only a fraction of that is ever actually recycled. Shaler Area High School Art Teacher Shauna Ferris was inspired to transform trash into art. “I was inspired by the Denise Hughes bottle cap mural that I saw while in North Carolina this summer while on vacation with my family and thought it would be a great opportunity to bring the concept of ‘reuse, reduce, and recycle’ to my classroom this fall.” Her students created a stylized version of the school logo: the Titan. The design has been enlarged and emblazoned on a 4’ x 4’ wooden board, painted, and prepared for the final artistic medium: bottle caps. Using bottle caps collected at home and at school, students are creating a sustainable mosaic that is both beautiful and responsible.
