Ray Milligan, apiarist, came to visit the students of Shaler Area Middle School to share his knowledge and expertise about beekeeping. He brought in equipment for students to interact with including a bee suit, a smoker, different sizes of hive boxes, and a functional observation hive with live bees.
Students were very surprised by how heavy frame full of comb is when it is overflowing with honey and enjoyed listening to Mr. Milligan’s stories.
In the first session, students sampled fresh honey that had been saved in jars. A highlight in the second session was using a plastic spoon to dig directly into a sealed frame full of comb brimming with honey to sample the freshest raw honey.
