Shaler Area school counselor named Pennsylvania School Counselor of the Year
Congratulations to Shaler Area school counselor Lezlie DelVecchio-Marks on being named Pennsylvania School Counselor of the Year by the Pennsylvania School Counselors Association (PSCA).

Ms. DelVecchio-Marks was recognized during the PSCA’s virtual recognition ceremony during the organization’s 65th annual conference on Thursday, December 3.

The Pennsylvania School Counselor of the Year award honors school counselors who have made significant contributions to their students and/or school districts through the development and implementation of comprehensive school counseling programs based on the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model.

"I feel extremely honored, blessed and grateful to have been selected for this honor,” Ms. DelVecchio-Marks said.

“I am fortunate to work with amazing staff members, administrators and families who continuously encourage my efforts to support my students' career, academic and social-emotional success.  There are so many school counselors across the state who do amazing work for children. I'm humbled to be considered among them.”

As the Pennsylvania School Counselor of the Year, Ms. DelVecchio-Marks will represent the state during the annual ASCA Gala held in February 2022 in Washington D.C.  At the Gala, the 2022 ASCA School Counselor of the Year will be named from the 50 state representatives.

As a school counselor, Ms. DelVecchio-Marks has implemented a number of schoolwide programs with the support of the community and school staff, including activities for Red Ribbon Week, Safety Day, Children’s Grief Awareness Day, Gratitude Week, No Name Calling Week, and Career Day. In addition, she has created programs and opportunities for students to build self-respect and coping skills, hosted parent workshops, and provided regular outreach to students and families.

She has made an effort to involve the entire school community in many of the school counseling program initiatives, which resulted in a “no make-up day” for staff members to reinforce messages of female empowerment and a choreographed performance of students and staff singing “This is Me” from the film “The Greatest Showman” during a schoolwide assembly.  She also addresses students' academic, career and social/emotional development through tiered interventions including classroom lessons, small group and individual counseling.
