Creating a Culture of Success: Shaler Area High School Recognized for Implementation of PBIS
Shaler Area High School has received another recognition for their integration of school-wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS). PBIS is a proactive approach that incentivizes and rewards positive choices students make.

PBIS not only enables teachers to recognize positive behavior in students, but it gives students the skills and practices they need to make healthy decisions. Through incentivizing positive choices and equipping students, PBIS creates more engaged classrooms, minimizes disruptions, and promotes school community as students work together toward goals. Dr. Royall, Principal of Shaler Area High School, explains, “High school teachers have actively supported our PBIS initiative which has positively re-shaped our culture. Students are continually demonstrating pride, respect, and honor in class and throughout the school.”

PBIS has been implemented district-wide and numerous schools have previously been honored for their successful use of PBIS. Shaler Area High School has added to their previous Tier 1 status, by implementing Tier 2 with fidelity. According to last year’s data, only 2 high schools in the Commonwealth were recognized for Tier 1 sustaining and Tier 2 fidelity. SAHS was commended by Carrie Frohnapfel, Ed.D, Training and Consultation Coordinator for Allegheny Intermediate Unit, for exceeding benchmarks to achieve Tier 2 status.

Dr. Bryan O’Black, Deputy Superintendent for Shaler Area School District, expressed, “We could not be prouder of the commitment of the entire Shaler Area High School team to make this happen.  This recognition speaks volumes to the culture that is being created at Shaler Area High School. Our PBIS program not only at the High School but across the District has become a tremendous point of pride. Implementing and sustaining a PBIS program at the high school level is unique, challenging, and comes with a level of commitment that many cannot undertake.  This group continues to push forward and develops new, forward-thinking approaches to helping our students pave the way to success at SAHS.”

SAHS will be recognized for implementing PBIS with fidelity at Tier 1 and 2 at the PAPBS Implementers Forum in November 2023.
