Shaler Area unveils new graduation gown design
navy graduation gown with a band of red and white fabric on the cuffsShaler Area is proud to unveil its new graduation gown to be worn by the Class of 2023 and all future graduating classes.

The new gown design features a band of white and red fabric on the cuff of a navy robe, utilizing all three of the district’s colors. It will be paired with a matching navy mortarboard. The new graduation gown will replace the previous practice of students choosing between a solid navy or solid white gown and mortarboard.

“The goal of the new graduation gown was to create a single, unified gown that was inclusive of the entire school district. We are excited that the new gown design features all three school colors—representing all four municipalities and the schools that merged to create Shaler Area School District more than 50 years ago,” said Superintendent Sean Aiken.

Shaler Area High School students were invited to submit designs for the new graduation gown last school year. A committee of high school students representing each grade and high school teachers and administrators provided input throughout the process of determining the final design.

“Shaler Area has a rich history, and we see this new graduation gown design as the beginning of a new tradition that will carry the district through the next 50 years,” Dr. Aiken said.

The new graduation gowns will be worn for the first time by the Class of 2023 during commencement on June 2, 2023.
