SAMS COVID PROTOCOLS

COVID PROTOCOLS

Parents and Staff,

There has been some confusion around our COVID-19 protocols for this school year, so we wanted to share a reminder about what to do if a student tests positive for COVID-19 or is exposed to someone who is.

If a student tests positive for COVID-19, the following steps should be taken:

  • Notify the building’s school nurse as soon as possible.

  • The student should remain home for at least 5 days and be isolated from others in the home.

  • If after 5 days the student is fever-free for 24 hours without the use of medication, and their symptoms are improving, or they never had symptoms, they may end isolation after day 5 and return to school.

    1. IMPORTANT NOTE: Day 1 begins the day after initial symptoms or positive COVID-19 test, whichever occurs first
  • The student should wear a high-quality mask through day 10

  • NOTE: The district will not contact trace or require quarantining of close contacts unless otherwise directed by the Allegheny County Health Department
  •

If a student is exposed to COVID-19 but it does not test positive or display symptoms, they are able to attend school as normal.

For additional information, Shaler Area’s full Health and Safety Plan is available on the district’s Back-to-School webpage: https://www.sasd.k12.pa.us/backtoschool2022.aspx

Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Taylor Bergfelt
