Q&A with Mrs. Biagiarelli
Janel Biagiarelli

Getting to know Mrs. Janel Biagiarelli, the new Shaler Area Middle School assistant principal
What are you most excited for with the start of the 2022-23 school year?
I am really looking forward to building connections with the incoming 7th graders and getting to know the 8th graders even better as the year begins. I look forward to working with the amazing SAMS staff, leading with Dr. Howard to maintain the high standards at the middle school, and creating new opportunities for all students to shine and showcase their individuality and talents.
Favorite subject:
English was always my favorite subject in school but Science and History were also enjoyable subjects for me. I still love to learn about those subjects.
What extracurricular activities did you do in middle school and high school?
I was a dancer beginning at about age six, and continued to dance for the Pittsburgh Community Ballet Company into my teens. I also was a member of Shaler Area's dance team and performed in the Shaler High School musicals.
What would you be if you weren’t an assistant principal?
I always had an interest in Marine Biology and when I was young, I would follow the adventures of Jacques Cousteau. Every year, during "Shark Week" I relive my fantasy career as a biologist studying sharks and their behavior. I am truly living my dream career in administration, but if not for this field, I could see myself as a biologist!
Favorite food:
My favorite food is Pollo Loco from 'El Campesino' Mexican restaurant. It is this amazing marinated grilled chicken with rice and a salad.
Favorite snack food:
I would have to say pretzels, nuts, and/or popcorn.
Favorite vacation spot:
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
What are your current hobbies?
I love to read, watch Netflix documentaries, and I started golfing about a year ago and really enjoy it. I also love spending time with my family and being at home cooking and baking.
What is one thing most people don’t know about you?
After graduating SA, I auditioned and was accepted into Point Park University's Conservatory of Dance. My major was Modern Dance and I also took many classes in Musical Theatre. I completed 2.5 years of the program and changed my major to Education. I graduated Point Park with a degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Modern Dance!
Any pets?
I have a dog named Bella. Bella is a Chihuahua and Yorkshire Terrier mix, a Chorkie! She is truly the sweetest little dog with the biggest heart.
What did you do on your summer vacation?
This year, my entire family went to Key West, Florida on a group vacation. We were celebrating my Dad's retirement, and we all coordinated our schedules and booked it almost a year in advance. My family and I had the best time and on the last day we visited Miami. We loved Miami!
