Shaler Area primary schools rank among top in state
Shaler Area is proud to announce all four of its primary schools are ranked among the top elementary schools in Pennsylvania by the U.S. News & World Report.

In October 2021, U.S. News released its rankings for the 2022 Best K-8 Schools. This is the first time U.S. News has published rankings and data on more than 80,000 public elementary and middle schools across the country.

All four of Shaler Area’s primary schools—Burchfield, Marzolf, Reserve, and Scott—ranked in the top 13 percent of Pennsylvania elementary schools, and two primary schools were ranked in the top 20 of the more than 1,700 elementary schools in the state. Burchfield Primary School ranked #13, and Scott Primary School ranked #16.

“This recognition is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our teachers, principals, and school community,” said Dr. Sean Aiken, superintendent. “We are very proud of the work that we do in Shaler Area and are looking forward to building on that success.”

Schools are ranked on their performance on state-required tests, graduation, and how well they prepare their students for high school. The methodology for the new K-8 rankings focuses on two areas, math and reading proficiency and math and reading performance. The state assessment data used in the rankings is from the 2018-2019 school year.
