Shaler Area students received top awards at the Festivals of Music
Shaler Area High School students returned from the Festivals of Music, held in Myrtle Beach, S.C. in April, with top awards as well as the Dr. Tim Lautzenhauser’s Esprit de Corps award presented for the students’ exemplary attitude of positive support and outstanding personal behavior.
About 260 Shaler Area High School students from the concert band, marching band and auxiliaries, choir, and orchestra participated in the Festivals of Music, an adjudicated competition.
Students receive ratings for their performances (fair, good, excellent, superior) as well as placement within their competition categories. Several additional awards also are given for top scores within the categories (Best in Class) and top overall scores, regardless of competing scores.
The Shaler Area Concert Band received an Excellent Rating and came in 1st place. Wind Ensemble received a Superior Rating and came in 1st place. It also was named Best Overall Concert Band. The Jazz Band received a Superior Rating and placed 1st. Sophomore Michael Zang, who plays the trumpet, was named Outstanding Jazz Soloist.
The Marching Band, Dance Team, Drum Line, Silk Line and Majorettes all received a Superior Rating and came in 1st place in their respective categories.
The Chamber Choir, Women’s Choir and Concert Choir all received a Superior Rating. Chamber Choir and Women's Choir came in 1st place in their respective categories, and Concert Choir came in 2nd place. The Chamber Choir also received the Best Overall Concert Choir award. Additionally, senior Paige Milavec was named Outstanding Vocalist in Chamber Choir, and freshman Madeline Bartosh was named Outstanding Accompanist in Concert Choir.
The String Orchestra received a Superior Rating and placed 1st.
