6th-grade students celebrate accomplishments of African Americans past and present

Students in Michelle McGuire's and Ann Mirosavich's social studies classes turned their research project into a whole-school lesson in February.

Shaler Area Elementary 6th-grade students researched the accomplishments of African Americans, past and present, then created "Who am I?" movie trailers, which encourage classmates to guess the famous individual. The trailers highlight the accomplishments of the individual and include music, photos, and graphics. Each day in February, Black History Month, students read a paragraph about the famous African American they researched and then invite all students in grades 4-6 to guess the person. Guesses are entered into a raffle.
