Shaler Area junior recognized in International Arts and Writing Competition
Shaler Area High School junior Caydin Kotewicz was recently recognized for her inspiring artwork in the 2020-2021 Waldman International Arts and Writing Competition.

The 2020-2021 Waldman International Arts and Writing Competition is presented by The Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh, in cooperation with P2G: Partnership2Gether, and is open to students in grades 6 to 12. This year’s theme, The Holocaust, Hope and the Human Spirit, 1939-1950, inspired many students who submitted entries in creative writing or visual arts categories.

Caydin Kotewicz’s entry, A Glimpse of Hope: Doing the unthinkable to survive, was one of three submissions in the High School Three-Dimensional Visual Art category to be recognized this year. Her artwork is a plaster sculpture of two petite hands with bright gold glitter covering portions of the hands.

“I hope to share a message that allows people to understand that each Holocaust survivor’s story is different and beautiful in its own way,” Kotewicz said. “Just like how each person has their own story in life, whether it’s big or small, it still matters.”

Kotewicz will be recognized at the 2021 Waldman Awards Ceremony. The date and time of the ceremony will be determined at a later date, due to COVID-19.
