Superintendent and school district awarded Patriot Award for support of soldiers
Capt. David Boyles presents the Patriot Award to Superintendent Sean Aiken and the Shaler Area School District

During the November 11, 2020 school board meeting, Capt. David Boyles presented Superintendent Sean Aiken with the Patriot Award, which recognizes individual bosses or supervisors who make a special effort to support citizen warriors through measures that include flexible schedules, time off prior to and after deployment, caring for families and granting leaves of absence if needed.

During this recent difficult time, the National Guard has responded to the community needs. Capt. Boyles, who is also an art teacher at Shaler Area High School, is part of the Pennsylvania National Guard, whose members remain activated in supporting the response to COVID-19. At its peak, there were over 1,500 members activated in support.

Under Gov. Tom Wolf’s proclamation of disaster emergency, signed March 6, the Pennsylvania National Guard can enter onto state active duty for missions designated by the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency. Currently, members are continuing support to long term nursing and care facilities, mobile testing sites, and Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency to assist local agencies in protecting life, property and the right to peacefully assemble and protest.

Members of the Pennsylvania National Guard live and work in communities throughout Pennsylvania and are following the Pennsylvania Department of Health recommendations to protect their force, families, and fellow Pennsylvanians.

On behalf of the PA National Guard, Capt. Boyles presented this award to Mr. Sean Aiken and Shaler Area School District for their continued support of soldiers as they continue to serve in their communities where and when needed.
