Shaler Area to hold tree dedication ceremony to honor Class of 2020
Shaler Area School District will host a tree dedication ceremony at noon on Saturday, May 22, to honor the Class of 2020 in recognition of their resilience during the COVID-19 crisis during the 2019-2020 school year.

“Last year’s senior class had their final year of high school interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Dr. Sean Aiken, superintendent.

“Many students missed their final athletic seasons, theatrical and musical performances, and senior events, but the students rose above the disappointments of the year to finish their high school career with strength and grace. The School Board of Directors and district administration want to recognize the Class of 2020’s unique characteristics with a memorial that will grow just as they did as students.”

The district planted a flowering pear tree in front of the high school to commemorate the Class of 2020 graduates. School district administration, high school administration and staff, and school board members will officially dedicate the tree during the May 22 ceremony and unveil the bronze plaque, which reads “This tree is planted in honor of the Class of 2020 for demonstrating strength and resilience during the COVID-19 crisis of Spring 2020. Sponsored by the Shaler Area School District Board of School Directors.”

Any Shaler Area student who graduated in 2020 is invited to attend.
