SAES Advanced Math Stock Market Activity

Currently in GATE Class

During the "remote" learning we will be posting information for GATE in Google Classroom. Students will need to log into Google Classroom and in the upper right hand corner + sign to add a course SAES GATE, Distance Learning with the code which was emailed out on March 27th.
All students have been in the Google Classroom before with their @shaler.us log ins (last name, first initial, and then last two digits of year of graduation), but if some reason they forget their log in, or you didn't receive the email sent out discussing the procedures for class moving forward, please email Mr. Penn or Mrs. Oros so we can get the information to you.
Past events in the GATE classroom:
Students are finishing reading the novel Animal Farm by George Orwell in GATE.  Books and comprehension packets need to be returned to the GATE classroom once a quiz is taken on the book.
The animal unit is beginning in GATE class. Students will be learning about the characteristics of different species and having a virtual dissection of a frog to help prepare them for their frog dissections.
*Due to the change in the delivery of school instruction at this time the dissections have been placed on hold.
The High School Science Club and High School GATE students are hosted a Science Fair on Feb. 27th.   Great job to all the 5th and 6th grade participants.  Photos of the students and their science projects are on the school webpage.

Geography Bee

The Geography Bee took place on 12/19/20.  Great work to everyone who participated.  Congratulations to Chloe L. who won the competition.

Great job to the 6th grade GATE Chess Team at the tournament which took place at Hampton Middle School in December of 2019.  Photo of the team is on our GATE webpage.  If you are interested in learning how to play chess we will be having sessions during lunch on Day 6.

Mr. Penn was selected to go to Antarctica in the winter of 2018.

JA Day on May 15, 2020

Shaler Area Elementary School will participate in Junior Achievement again this year. Junior Achievement (JA) is a youth development organization with the core purpose to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy.
We are asking for parent volunteers and people from the community to participate in volunteering their time for this event on May 15, 2020. If you would like to learn more about Junior Achievement or have questions about the specifics of this event, please contact Heather Oros at [email protected]  .

Book Orders for GATE Students

Scholastic Book Orders are due by 3/26/20.
Students can now order books at their reading level, either on line or by picking up a booklet within the GATE room.  If you are ordering online, please go to scholastic.com/bookclubs
Class Activation Code: H8VRW

Follow these steps in order to gain access to great reading.  Best of all, we earn a FREE book for the classroom library every time a parent places an order online. I will include these books as incentives within the GATE classroom.

It’s so simple! Here’s how it works:
SIGN UP at www.scholastic.com/bookclubs. On the parent page, register by clicking click the “Don’t have a user name or password?” link. When prompted, enter the one-time Class Activation Code shown above. This unique code ensures that your order is sent to me.
SELECT the books you’d like to order—choose from thousands of titles—many more than in our monthly flyers.
SEND your order to me online by the due date and your child’s books will be delivered directly to my classroom. Ordering online is fast, easy, and secure.

Of course, you can still order using the form from the printed flyer. But why not see for yourself how convenient it is to order online?

Thank you,
Mrs. Oros

Lexile Information

Students take the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) assessment a couple times throughout the year.  Students learn about their Lexile.  To find books at an independent reading level, a student should read books 100-150 below their Lexile score.  Additionally, if the student has a higher Lexile, the library may not have a lot of selection at that level.  As long as the GATE student is reading at the appropriate grade level Lexile and above that is fine.  We are currently trying to compile a list of books with a high text complexity and appropriate age appropriate content for students who have above 1100 Lexile.  Any questions, come ask us.  Trouble finding books, check out www.lexile.com to find books in the appropriate Lexile range.

IKS Titan Simulator

Throughout the year there might be different visitors from outside the district wanting to learn more about the IKS Titan Simulator. Students who are having GATE class at a time of a visit will assist with discussing the different positions within the simulator and model how everyone on the simulator needs to work together in order to be successful in problem solving.
