Students in 4th through 6th grade at Shaler Area Elementary School spent two weeks as engineers creating a multiroom, inflatable “Mars colony” with sheets of plastic, duct tape and box fans. The students researched the current efforts to explore Mars, then used math and engineering skills to design and create the inflatable colony, which takes up an entire classroom.
