"More Than Sad: Suicide Prevention Education for Parents"
Thursday, Nov. 9
7-8:15 p.m.
Shaler Area Middle School

Shaler Area will host "More Than Sad: Suicide Prevention Education for Parents" on Thursday, Nov. 9, from 7-8:15 p.m. at Shaler Area Middle School.
The program will be presented by officials from the local chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and geared toward parents on preventing suicide in young people.

The program is free and open to the public. In particular, parents of students in grades 5 through 12 are encouraged to attend.

According to Jennifer Sikora, director of AFSP Western Pennsylvania, suicide is the No. 2 leading cause of death among adolescents and teens, and even well meaning parents may not know enough about the risk factors and warning signs.

"During this presentation, a representative from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention will use a mix of video and education content to help parents better understand how to differentiate depression, anxiety and potentially suicidal ideation from normal teenage behavior," Ms. Sikora said. "We will discuss options and what to expect when getting help for a young person."

The session will also provide guidance around bullying and handling media exposure such as Netflix's 13 Reasons Why.

"The information presented will be life-lasting for parents," Ms. Sikora said.
