Shaler Area students received top awards at the Festivals of Music
Shaler Area High School students returned from the Festivals of Music, held in Chicago, Ill. in April 2019 , with top awards as well as the Dr. Tim Lautzenhauser’s Esprit de Corps award presented for the students’ exemplary attitude of positive support and outstanding personal behavior. 

About 230 Shaler Area High School students from the concert band, marching band and auxiliaries, choir, and orchestra participated in the Festivals of Music, an adjudicated competition.

Students receive ratings for their performances (fair, good, excellent, superior) as well as placement within their competition categories. Several additional awards also are given for top scores within the categories (Best in Class) and top overall scores, regardless of competing scores.

The Shaler Area Honors Wind Ensemble and Honors Jazz Ensemble I both received a Superior Rating and came in 1st place in their respective categories. Additionally, the Honors Wind Ensemble was named Best Overall Band at the Festival – the Dr. Revelli Award, and Zachary Spondike, who plays tenor saxophone, was named Outstanding Jazz Soloist. The Concert Band received an Excellent Rating and 2nd place. 

The Titan Marching Band received an Excellent Rating and 1st place. It also was named Best Overall Marching Band at the Festival. The Dance Team and Drum Line both received a Superior Rating and 1st place in their respective categories. Additionally, the Dance Team was named the Best Overall Parade Auxiliary at the Festival. The Silk Line and Majorettes both received an Excellent Rating and 1st place in their respective categories. 

The Honors Chamber Choir and Honors Women’s Chorus both received a Superior Rating and 1st place in their respective categories. Additionally, the Honors Women’s Chorus was named Best Overall Choir at the Festival. The Concert Choir received a Superior Rating and placed 2nd. 

The String Orchestra received an Excellent Rating and placed 1st.
