Shaler Area approves new head football coach
Jim RyanShaler Area welcomes Jim Ryan as the new head coach of the Shaler Area varsity football team.
 
Mr. Ryan has been involved with the Shaler Area football program since 2004 as an assistant varsity football coach. He has worked as the junior varsity defensive coordinator, varsity offensive line coach, weight room coordinator/strength coach and run game coordinator. Mr. Ryan also has served as the head middle school football coach and head boys varsity indoor/outdoor track and field coach.
 
"This is a great opportunity for me to give back to the community that has served me so well, and I am very excited to provide the same quality leadership and mentoring that has molded me into the person I am today," Mr. Ryan said.
 
Mr. Ryan is a graduate of the Shaler Area Class of 2000.  He was starting offensive lineman for the only team in Shaler Area history to win a section title in 1998 under Head Coach Frank Rocco.  Mr. Ryan was a walk on at Slippery Rock University where he was awarded Scout Team Player of the Year in 2000.  During that same season, the team won the PSAC West title under Head Coach Dr. George Mihalik. Mr. Ryan earned an athletic scholarship and a starting position at center in the following season where the team defeated Howard Schnellenberger's Florida Atlantic University Owls.  

Mr. Ryan has a master’s degree in special education and has been a teacher at Shaler Area since 2008. He currently teaches special education courses at Shaler Area High School.

Jim resides in Shaler Township with his wife, Anne, daughter, Livia, and son, J.P.
