Shaler Area High School to open curtain on "Cyrano de Bergerac"

Shaler Area High School students will challenge their theatrical skills when they stage “Cyrano de Bergerac” as this year’s fall play.

The play follows the unrequited love story of Cyrano de Bergerac a swordsman and poet who is too self-conscious about his large nose to pursue the woman he loves. Instead he helps a fellow soldier, Christian, win the heart of Roxane.

This year 39 students will take the stage as cast members, including senior Dan Bitter as Cyrano de Bergerac, junior Zach Reed as Christian, junior Erika Spondike as Roxane and junior Andrew Lesnett as Le Bret.

Shaler Area is the only school in the United States to stage “Cyrano de Bergerac” this year.

Co-directors Kristen Susany and Anne Loudon chose the play to provide a dramatic challenge for the theater students and exposure to a literary classic. Students will explore stage combat for several sword-fighting scenes in the play, and junior Abigail Cole will be tasked with creating a prosthetic nose for Bittner’s Cyrano.

The performances will be 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 11, and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12, at Shaler Area High School auditorium, 381 Wible Run Road.

Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students, children, and senior citizens.
