Marzolf Primary student makes his film debut in "Me and Earl and the Dying Girl"

Gavin Dietz, a second-grader at Marzolf Primary School, in the Shaler Area School District, will make his film debut in “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” when it is released in June.

The film, which was shot in Pittsburgh last year, follows two teen filmmakers who befriend a girl with cancer. Thomas Mann, R.J. Cyler and Olivia Cooke were cast as the leads. Gavin plays Thomas Mann’s character, Greg Gaines, as a child in flashback scenes.

“Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” received a standing ovation during the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, earlier this year, where the film received the U.S. Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic and Audience Award: U.S. Dramatic.

The film is scheduled to be released June 12.
