Shaler Area students explore computer coding in the Hour of Code event

Students across Shaler Area School District participated in Code.org’s worldwide Hour of Code event as an introduction to computer science and computer coding during the second week in December.

The event challenges students—and adults—around the world to complete one hour of computer coding during the week through Code.org’s tutorial in celebration of Computer Science Education Week.

Throughout the week, students used a drag and drop method of coding to help characters move, navigate, and complete other tasks. When students complete the basic challenges, they move onto more advanced challenges. Students also have the opportunity to learn and work on Java Script through guided lessons. Students are encouraged to continue working on the website here at school and at home beyond the week of code.

The Hour of Code is just one opportunity for students to explore computer science through the district’s renewed STEAM focus.
