Shaler Area Elementary School starts the District's first School Bank Program

Shaler Area Elementary School students now are able to take their spare change and deposit it into a bank savings account without ever leaving their school building.

Shaler Area Elementary partnered with PNC Bank to establish a School Bank Program to benefit the students in the fourth- to sixth-grade building.

The PNC School Bank Program is designed to help school students learn financial and money management skills early on and encourage school-aged children to take an interest in saving and banking. Students can sign up for a PNC Bank savings account through the School Bank Program and then visit the School Bank on designated banking days, held every other Thursday, and deposit any amount.

Sixth-graders who have been trained by PNC employees serve as the tellers during the school banking days under the supervision of school staff and PNC Bank representatives.

“At this age, kids are thinking more day-to-day, and this program helps them make a connection between their choices today and decisions for the future,” said Heather Oros, Gifted and Talented Education teacher.

In the first week of the program, 45 students created bank accounts through the School Bank, and on Dec. 11, the first School Banking Day, 31 students made a deposit.
