Stay warm and safe this winter with a few helpful tips

With the winter weather season finally upon us, remember to take additional precautions when traveling to school or waiting at the bus stop to protect yourself and student from the cold.

  • Wear multiple layers of loose-fitting clothing.
  • Stay dry and wear waterproof clothes and boots: excess water can cause an increase in heat loss.
  • Wear a hat: 40 percent of your body heat is lost through your head.
  • Stay hydrated: dehydration speeds up heat loss and the effects of the cold.
  • Wear gloves and a scarf: toes, fingers, ears and nose are the most susceptible to frostbite because they have the least muscle to keep them warm and are the farthest from internal organs.

Hypothermia is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that occurs when the body temperature drops below 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Hypothermia is most common outdoors in sub-freezing temperatures or windchills. Windchill measures heat lost by the human body due to the weather. The colder the air and the stronger the wind, the faster heat is lost.
