Shaler Area High School students take local produce from "farm to table" in a new program this winter

Shaler Area High School students are learning to identify and prepare local winter produce through participating in a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program this season.

Students in the high school’s Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program are participating in a “farm to table” activity as part of the Fairchild Challenge at Phipps, a yearlong environmental competition.

The High School used $200 of its $1,000 winnings from coming in first place during last year’s Fairchild Challenge at Phipps to purchase a Winter CSA box of local, organic produce from Kretschmann Farm, in New Sewickley Township, Beaver County. Students are challenging themselves to identify the winter produce and create home cooked meals for their families from the harvest.

"My mom is always looking for new dinner options, so I am interested to get some local produce during the second collection, take it home and make a new, creative dish,” said Claire Blaha, a sophomore.

There are about 30 student who participate in the program and gather to discuss the recipes they made with produce from each delivery.
