Shaler Area High School students help identify storm drains in watersheds

Shaler Area High School partnered with Alcosan and the Borough of Etna to identify and label storm drains located in watersheds, to educate the public and combat waterway pollution.

About 20 Shaler Area High School students in the Ecology Club and Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program participated in Alcosan’s Storm Drain Stenciling Program on Thursday, Oct. 15. As part of the program, students identified about 300 storm drains in the Borough of Etna and stenciled the message “Dump No Waste – Drains to River” near the drains. The Borough of Etna is located in the Pine Creek Watershed.

The message students spray painted onto the asphalt and concrete around the storm drains is a simple and direct way to educate the public about how storm drains are connected to the local waterways.
