Shaler Area Middle School garden named Garden of the Month

The Ingomar Garden Club recognized the hard work and green thumbs of the Shaler Area Middle School students and staff by naming the middle school’s garden as September’s Garden of the Month.

The garden is developed in coordination with the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. The flowerbeds were prepared in the spring and summer by seventh- and eighth-grade students under the supervision of Nancy Kriek, now retired middle school science teacher, and Darla Gerlach, middle school gifted and talented education teacher. Flowers are selected from a suggested list provided by the Conservancy and then planted by the student-volunteers according to an approved schematic created by the Conservancy. Two additional perennial gardens located near the main, colorful rows of flowers have been designed, created and maintained by students.

The flowers in this year’s gardens include multicolored zinnias and rudbeckia.
