The Shaler Area School Board recognized several students during its Sept. 9 Committee of the Whole meeting for their heroic actions two situations.

On Aug. 26, the first day of school, a bus driver experienced a medical emergency during a bus route and seven middle school students showed mature, logical and caring actions to help the driver and other students.

The students recognized were Emma Dischner, Daniel Evans, Aaron Glusic, Austin Henne, Jennifer Raymond, Devon Scarramuzzo and George Vassilev.

On Sept. 4, a female student became distressed during her lunch period when a small chunk of ice was caught in her throat and she began to choke. Seventh-graders Caelin Stewart and Heidi Scherrah recognized she was struggling and sought a teacher, Mr. Dan Sullivan, who performed the Heimlich maneuver.

Shaler Area School District and the School Board applaud the maturity of these students for their quick thinking and actions in the situations.
