Shaler Area Middle School students remember Sept. 11

Shaler Area Middle School seventh-graders are taking time out of their day to remember the events of Sept. 11, 2001 on the 14th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States.

While many of the students had not yet been born to experience Sept. 11 firsthand, on Friday, Sept. 11, 2015, they will learn about the events surrounding the terrorist attacks and the actions taken following the attacks in a special presentation and activities throughout the day.

Middle School staff will share their own personal recollections from the day and students will participate in activities that incorporate social studies, reading and writing lessons.

“I started teaching about 9/11 several years ago after realizing that my students spent an anniversary in school without even a mention of the tragedy,” said Brian Duermeyer, a middle school English teacher who organized the program. “I am thankful I can work with other teachers to expose my students to this important piece of history."
