Marzolf Primary School’s mural a community effort

When Marzolf Primary School students walked through the front doors this school year, they were greeted with a fresh coat of paint and mural created especially for them.

Painted onto the bright blue walls above the front doorway are images and words to encourage the Kindergarten through third-grade students when they enter the school.

The message reads: “When you enter this school, you are scientists; you are authors; you are important; you are leaders; you are thinkers you are explorers; you are creators; you are readers; you are a friend; you are loved. You are the reason we are here!”

Marzolf Primary School staff conceived of the mural design over the summer after Anita DeStefano, Marzolf school secretary, found the inspiration for the mural’s message on Facebook and shared it with many of the Marzolf staff. The idea grew as staff expressed their support in adding the message to the school entrance.

Rick Pelkofer, Marzolf principal, gave the staff permission to make the mural a permanent addition to the school, and Therasa Joseph, the art teacher at Marzolf, volunteered her artistic ability and time to complete the work of art over the summer.

“It’s so true about who we are,” Joseph said of the mural message.
